Message from the President: August 1 is Emancipation Day
The following message was issued to members of the ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï community on behalf of the Office of the President.
Dear Members of the Campus Community,
August 1 was unanimously designated as Emancipation Day by the House of Commons in 2021 to mark the enactment of the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 on August 1, 1834, across the British Empire. On March 23, 2022, the Prince Edward Island Legislature followed by unanimously passing a bill to recognize Emancipation Day on PEI.
Emancipation Day
In 1833, the British Empire introduced the Slavery Abolition Act and on August 1, 1834, slavery was abolished. Despite that, racial discrimination continued and continues today in Canada and on Prince Edward Island. It is important to acknowledge that slavery was present in Atlantic Canada, including PEI.
On March 23, 2022, the Prince Edward Island Legislature unanimously passed a bill to recognize August 1 as Emancipation Day.

Meet Shannan Hill, ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï Bachelor of Science in Mathematics graduate
What brought you to ºÚÁϳԹÏ? Why did you choose to study here?
I was attracted to ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï initially because it's a small university with small class sizes and a focus on undergraduate students and programs. I felt that going to ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï would open many different opportunities and would allow me to remain close to friends and family on the Island at the same time.
